Dental Crowns

If you're dealing with a damaged tooth that can still be saved, a dental crown could be the key to restoring its strength, size, and shape. Crowns provide a durable way to reinforce a tooth that’s suffering from decay, fractures, or other types of damage, ensuring your smile stays as functional and beautiful as possible.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration designed to fit over the visible portion of a tooth, effectively "capping" it to rebuild its shape and enhance its function. It can be made from various materials, with the most common being metal and ceramic.

Ceramic crowns are particularly popular for their ability to integrate with natural teeth, offering a discreet option that’s almost indistinguishable from the rest of your smile. Metal crowns, while not as aesthetically pleasing, are highly durable and often used for back teeth where strength is the priority.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns can be an ideal solution for various dental issues. You might need a crown if:

  • Your tooth has significant decay or damage that can't be fixed with a filling.
  • Your tooth is weakened due to a large filling or previous dental work.
  • You’ve experienced a cracked or fractured tooth.
  • You want to cover a discolored or misshapen tooth.
  • You’re receiving a dental implant and a crown is needed to complete the restoration.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

During the appointment, we will carefully examine the affected tooth with X-rays to determine if a crown is the right course of action. If there is decay or damage, we’ll remove the affected tissue and shape the tooth to accommodate the crown.

Once the tooth is prepared, we’ll take a 3d scan of your mouth to create a custom crown. Finally, we’ll bond the permanent crown and make any necessary adjustments.

How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?

How long does a dental crown last?

With proper care, dental crowns can last for many years. Regular brushing and flossing—along with routine dental visits—will help your crown stay clean and functional. On average, crowns last about 10 years, but with diligent oral hygiene, they can often last longer.
