Post-Op Information

Caring for your mouth after surgery is crucial for a quick recovery and to avoid complications. Please follow these guidelines carefully to ensure a smooth recovery.
The First 24 Hours
For the first day following your procedure, avoid activities that could disrupt the healing process:
- Do not rinse your mouth, spit, or use a straw.
- Avoid smoking and drinking carbonated beverages.
- Steer clear of hot liquids, as they can increase bleeding.
Pain Management
It's normal to experience some discomfort after oral surgery. To manage pain effectively:
- Take one Tylenol (325 mg) and two Ibuprofens (400 mg) together every 4-6 hours as needed.
- Stay ahead of the pain by taking your medication on schedule, rather than waiting for discomfort to become severe.
Managing Bleeding
Some bleeding is normal, especially during the first few hours post-surgery. To control it:
- Keep your head elevated and apply firm pressure on the gauze over the surgical site. Replace the gauze as needed, particularly after drinking fluids or taking medication.
- It's not uncommon to see some swelling or bruising within the first week. This process is a normal part of the healing process and should gradually diminish.
Handling Discomfort and Swelling
You’re likely to experience some discomfort and swelling after procedures:
- Expect mild to moderate swelling, which may peak 2-3 days post-surgery. Applying an ice pack in 15-minute intervals can help reduce this.
- Avoid physical exertion or heavy lifting for the first few days to minimize post-operative effects.
Keeping an Eye Out for Complications
Your healing progress is important to us. If you notice any of the following, please reach out to our office immediately:
- Fever or chills.
- Persistent foul taste or odor from the surgical site.
- Increased swelling, particularly if it worsens after the initial 3-day period.
